Rooted in Sustainability

Leaving Hope for the Future

HomeGrown HideAways was built on the bedrock of sustainability. We incorporate active and passive solar design; local, salvaged, and repurposed materials; organic gardening and timberstand improvement practices; and onsite compost and recycle bins.

Solar

The Community Farmhouse features a 9.24kW solar array that powers the Farmhouse, Pavilion, Treetop Flyer Treehouse, and TWO level 2 EV chargers.

Important Note: FREE Electric Vehicle charging!

The Bath House has a hand-built solar water heater that helps offset the electrical usage needed for hot showers.

Solar and LED lighting is used throughout the farm to increase efficiency and minimize our need for grid-tied electric.

Gardens

We love having HomeGrown food growing right outside our door, but we honestly just make this part up as we go. We frequently refer to this part of our business as "Darwin Farm" because we never know if what we plant will thrive or die.

When we succeed, you can purchase our HomeGrown goods from the onsite Farm Stand, but we're not so bold as to promise we'll have anything in stock.

Forest

Our 80 acres of forest is our favorite part of the farm. Our forestry management plan is primarily designed for:

  • wildlife habitat
  • hardwood improvement
  • recreation (hiking trails, bird-watching)
  • non-timber forest products (edible & medicinal plants)

We do not log our forest aside from selective harvesting to remove invasive species and standing dead for firewood.

Recycling

We do our best to keep as many items out of the landfill as possible and encourage our guests to take an active role in this as well.

We provide Climax spring water so guests can refill their water bottles instead of bringing single use plastic, but we also have recycling bins for aluminun, steel, and plastic containers (glass recycling isn't available in our area) so that guests don't have to put those items in the trash during their visit.

All food scraps can go in our compost bin to be turned into future food (this also keeps our dogs and other critters from getting sick).
